EUR spending for German residents: card, conversion and funding costs

For a €100 charge from a German merchant: Bitpanda can spend an existing EUR wallet balance; OKX converts USDC/USDG with a 0.1% spread, about €0.10; ether.fi currently adds no EUR FX markup. Funding, conversion and asset-sale costs still differ. These editions have published German residence eligibility, and “0% FX” alone cannot rank their total cost.

Which editions cover German residents?

Bitpanda requires a euro-area residence and verified account, so Germany is within scope; this comparison uses its physical card. OKX EEA covers EU residents including Germany but currently issues a virtual card only. ether.fi lists Germany for Cash; this comparison uses Core virtual. Actual approval still depends on identity, account and compliance checks. Visiting or spending in Germany is not proof of residence.

Start with euros: check the funding wallet

Bitpanda lets you select the EUR wallet as the payment source. A €100 purchase from that wallet at a EUR-priced German merchant has no cross-currency card leg. Funding the same purchase with crypto instead triggers an asset sale at Bitpanda’s trading quote and normal trading fee. Do not label both routes “free”; inspect the app’s trade summary and card transaction details before deciding.

If you do not already hold euros, acquiring or converting them may cost money. This guide does not invent your funding route, purchase price or trading spread. Bitpanda’s no-extra-fee treatment for non-EUR card purchases does not waive a crypto sale fee.

Start with stablecoins: OKX versus ether.fi

OKX EEA spends USDC or USDG from OKX Pay and converts at payment. It lists no extra card transaction fee or EUR FX fee, but publishes a 0.1% stablecoin-to-fiat market spread. On a €100 reference amount that is about €0.10; acquiring the stablecoin, funding the account and the final conversion quote are separate.

ether.fi Cash currently applies a beta zero-FX-markup rule when the merchant actually charges EUR; USDC and EURC funding can both qualify. A €100 EUR price does not become €101 solely because of that card markup, but assets still convert at the applicable rate. On-chain transfers, bank funding and the cost of obtaining the asset are not waived. If a terminal changes the merchant’s billing currency, the EUR rule may not apply.

Choose by funding route, not a 0% headline

Already hold EUR and need a physical card? Check Bitpanda’s EUR-wallet route. Primarily hold USDC/USDG and can use a virtual card? Check OKX’s 0.1% conversion spread. Already use ether.fi Cash and pay merchants in EUR? Check its beta zero-markup rule and your funding cost. These are different starting conditions, not a universal cheapest-card ranking.

Do not automatically subtract headline cashback. Bitpanda excludes fiat-balance and stablecoin payments from its crypto-funded cashback; OKX rewards depend on offer, tier and spending asset; ether.fi rewards have eligibility and tier rules. Verify the chosen funding asset, current in-app quote and settled record.
